The City of Sioux Falls is seeking dedicated Firefighters to join our Emergency Services department within the Government & Civil Service sector. As a Firefighter, you will respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and other public safety calls, protecting life, property, and the environment for residents and visitors. You will operate and maintain firefighting apparatus, equipment, and tools; perform fire suppression, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul activities; and assist with emergency medical care as part of an integrated response team. Daily duties include inspecting and maintaining vehicles, hoses, ladders, breathing apparatus, and protective gear to ensure constant readiness; participating in regular drills and training on fireground operations, EMS skills, hazardous materials awareness, and technical rescue; and following all departmental standard operating guidelines and safety protocols. Firefighters support fire prevention and community risk reduction by conducting building pre-incident plans, assisting with fire inspections as directed, installing and checking smoke alarms, and providing public education on fire safety and emergency preparedness at schools, community events, and outreach programs. This role requires the ability to work 24-hour or rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and to perform physically demanding tasks in extreme conditions while wearing full protective equipment. Firefighters must communicate clearly with officers, crew members, dispatch, law enforcement, and medical personnel, and accurately document incident information and reports. The City of Sioux Falls values integrity, professionalism, and service; as part of this culture, Firefighters are expected to work collaboratively within diverse teams, treat the public with respect and compassion during stressful situations, and continually pursue training to advance skills and career development. Successful candidates bring strong situational awareness, sound judgment under pressure, and a commitment to public service, safety, and continuous improvement in all aspects of emergency response and community engagement.
