Position Overview
The Utility Locator & Equipment Operator is responsible for safely locating underground utilities and operating heavy equipment in support of excavation, directional boring, and infrastructure projects. This role works as part of a small field crew and is hands-on, safety-focused, and field-driven. This candidate will need to be open to national travel. If out of state travel is required Per Diem and an Airbnb for lodging will be provided.
Duration: 3 to 4 month contract to hire
Start Date: May 4th
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Operate construction and locating equipment, including Ditch Witch, Vermeer, and related subsurface tools -Perform basic utility locating to identify underground lines prior to excavation
- Run or assist with equipment such as directional boring machines, excavators, and pothole machines
- Work as part of a 4-person crew (crew size may vary by job)
- Perform manual/hand work as needed to support job completion
- Travel to job sites across Iowa with potential opportunities for national travel
- Maintain equipment, follow safety protocols, and support efficient jobsite execution
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- 3–5 years of experience in utility locating
- Hands-on machine operation experience (Ditch Witch or directional boring drills)
- Willingness and ability to perform physical, hands-on work
- Open to national travel
- Valid driver’s license
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Prior experience with subsurface or underground utility projects
- CDL or CDL with air brake endorsement
Compensation:
$25/hr to $35/hr.
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
